Description of the Book: The Chora of Metaponto: The Necropoleis

This two-volume set is the first of a series of volumes that will deal with various aspects of the chora (or territory) of the ancient Greek colony of Metaponto in Southern Italy. It provides a complete record of the first necropolis (burial ground) to be published in its entirety after over a century of archaeological exploration in Magna Grecia. At the same time, these volumes present the first major document from the Greek countryside, to whose historical and archaeological importance the Metaponto project first drew attention two decades ago. This work sets 400 burials dating from the 6th to the 3rd centuries B.C. in topographical, historical, and cultural contexts. Excavated by a University of Texas team between 1976 and 1986, all of the burials are thoroughly documented graphically and photographically. Specialists' studies deal with ceramic and other finds of late Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic art of the first order (especially bronze mirrors and vases). Another original feature of the work is its in-depth study of human remains, which, in contrast to all previous studies of necropoleis, are treated as primary material. The discovery of endemic treponematosis (syphilis) among the population of the chora as early as the 6th century B.C. has far-reaching implications beyond the field of classical archaeology and history. The results of this study shed new light on the social and economic status of the chora's inhabitants in the greatest period of Greek civilization and on the question of their biological interrelatedness. These volumes should be a fundamental reference for students of ancient society and the history of disease, as well as for traditional archaeologists and art historians.
